How open/click tracking works

NetHunt CRM allows you to send emails and track the opens of emails sent by users. In order to achieve this we add an invisible pixel to an email, which is located on our servers. When the email is delivered and someone opens it, this pixel is loaded and we consider this emails to be opened by the recipient.

Here's what it looks like if we look at the email code:

NetHunt CRM also counts the number of clicks on the links included in your emails. When we send an email with a link via NetHunt, all the links included in the email are replaced with our links, meaning that we add a piece of our own data to the initial link. It is hardly noticeable to users, but firstly the request and transition takes place to our website so that we record this click, and at the same moment to the page of the initial link.

For all these processes, NetHunt CRM has multiple domains used for email open/click tracking. These domains are used by all NetHunt CRM users. There are some rare cases when some of the users start abusing the capabilities of emailing and violate the rules, due to which one of the NetHunt CRM domains can be banned for several hours. At this moment, all email campaigns are stopped until this ban is lifted.

To avoid such cases, we have added an opportunity for users to add their own custom tracking domain in the settings.

Benefits of using a custom tracking domain

  • Emails look more secure for your recipients and ESP’s

  • Your sender reputation isn’t affected by other users

  • Potentially grants up to 20% improvement in deliverability

  • Branded tracking domain instead of a generic domain

How to configure your own custom tracking domain

Please go to Settings and pick Domains section:

With your next step you need to go to the personal account of the service in which your domain is registered, and find the "DNS Records" section in settings. In our case, we will explain it on the example of the GoDaddy, but generally the setting and DNS record creation looks the same for all domain providers.

  1. You need to add the CNAME value of the record, in order to do so click "add a new record" in the DNS record settings - select the "CNAME" type, give the record a name, and copy the CNAME value in the NetHunt CRM settings:

2. Save all changes in the settings of the "DNS Records" section.

3. Go back to NetHunt settings and enter the name of the created subdomain. The subdomain name consists of the DNS record name + your domain name. For instance, I've called my DNS record customtrackingtest + my main domain name is nethunt.com, thus, my subdomain name would be customtrackingtest.nethunt.com

Please hit connect, now you have successfully configured your custom tracking domain.

If you are using Cloudflare, here is a more detailed guide on how to set up your custom tracking domain there.
